Brunswick County Feature: Morgan Creek Wildlife Rescue

Tucked away in the heart of Winnabow, NC, Morgan Creek Wildlife Rescue is doing quiet, powerful work: rescuing and rehabilitating injured and orphaned fawns across Brunswick County and beyond. As a grassroots 501(c)(3) nonprofit, this organization is fueled by compassion, community support, and a deep respect for our region's native wildlife.

Founded and led by licensed wildlife rehabilitator Madge Matteo, Morgan Creek is known for its hands-on approach to rescue work. With over 17 years in North Carolina and a history of service through Seabiscuit Wildlife Shelter and Advocates for Animal Rights (AFAR), Madge brings both expertise and heart to every life she helps save.

What They Do:

  • Fawn Rescue & Rehabilitation: Feeding, sheltering, and medically supporting young deer until they can be safely released.

  • Emergency Wildlife Care: Step-in support when native animals are injured, orphaned, or displaced.

  • Wildlife Advocacy: Working with local and state governments to promote humane wildlife policies.

  • Education & Outreach: Helping the public understand what to do (and not do) when they encounter wildlife.

  • Transport Assistance: Limited transport support available for other wildlife cases statewide.

Rooted in Compassion, Driven by Community

Morgan Creek Wildlife Rescue thrives thanks to local support—from donations and Amazon wish list items to volunteers who help keep operations going. Their rescue work isn’t just about animals—it’s about building a more compassionate, educated, and wildlife-conscious community.
